“Sadly this is a move that many of us predicted and feared would occur upon the announcement of their public inquiry in 2020. “This government condones transgender conversion abuse," wrote trans activist Munroe Bergdorf on Instagram, who earlier this year removed herself from Twitter because of the trolling she received on the app. Things are somewhat better for gay people now – we can get married, we can serve in the military and we share all the same rights as the straights (providing the government doesn't twist into a third u-turn on homosexual conversion therapy later today – such is the fragility of freedom for all of this country’s minorities) but for trans people, the very real tyranny of societal fear and prejudice remains all too present. It was illegal to be gay in the UK only up until 1967 when Labour prime minister Harold Wilson decriminalised it, and Margaret Thatcher's 1988 Section 28 clause banning the “promotion” of homosexuality in schools was only repealed by labour PM Tony Blair in 2003. I'm gay, and a pervasive sense of shame has followed me around for most of my adult life as a direct result of the way in which homosexual people have historically been treated by successive Tory governments. It shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that Johnson and his pack of right-wing cronies have reneged on their promise, of course, but despite its predictability the lack of any clear dedication to banning any and all conversion treatments demonstrated by the leak still smarts.

It was initially reported this morning that the proposed conversion therapies ban would be dropped in its entirety, but the government has since done a second u-turn (good work guys), announcing that any therapies which attempt to change individuals' sexuality will be outlawed, whilst practices designed to alter peoples' gender identity will remain legal. But the means to that end – self-loathing, suicidal ideation, years of false starts – could make you feel lonelier, and less like yourself, than you’d ever felt in your life.”
